Can Lenovo Beat Apple? Is Linux the Secret Weapon?

http://www.itbusinessedge.com

Other than giving a bunch of Apple fans the initiative to call me nasty names (go here to understand why), the real question I’d like you to consider is, “Can anyone beat Apple?”

The answer is yes. No company is impossible to beat. Clearly, Apple has been pounded in the past, but with every cell phone and MP3 player company on the planet focused on kicking Apple’s hind end, why the heck hasn’t anyone been able to do it yet?

Nike+ coming to iPhone and iPod touch

http://stuff.tv

"Nike+ will definitely be extending its compatibility beyond the iPod Nano to the iPhone and iPod touch. No surprise there really, but the interesting detail is that it could also make use of both devices Wi-Fi (and, ultimately for the iPhone, 3G capability) to let you update your training log on the fly. Once you’ve legged round your local park you’ll be able to send the data (probably via a software app like the one the new SportBand uses) wirelessly without having to sit down and drip sweat over your computer. Very cool," Mark Wilson reports for Stuff.tv.

Zibreg writes, "We took a hard, long look at the information that is available right now from reports as well as patent filings to give you an outlook what Apple might be up to, why we are quite certain that VoIP and videoconferencing will be the iPhone’s new killer applications."

Where are all the missing iPhones ?

Where are all the iPhones? Apple sold 3.7 million of its hit mobile phones last year, but its official partners only registered 2.3 million new customers. Meanwhile, many of its U.S. retail stores are selling out of the handsets. Apple is tight-lipped, but the two stories could be related.

iPhone's Development Limitations Could Hurt It In the Long Run

http://resources.zdnet.co.uk

"Apple might have finally come around to allowing third party developers to create applications for the iPhone, but only up to a point. ZDNet UK claims Apple is leaving itself vulnerable to the competition and to a loss of lustre by blocking background tasks on the device. The author notes, 'Perhaps it doesn't trust application designers or users very much. Perhaps it wants the best software for itself, where it can limit what it can do in order not to upset its telco friends. Whatever the reason, it reflects badly on Apple.

Microsoft or Apple - Who Is the Faster Patcher?

http://security.itworld.com

"And the answer is... Microsoft. Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology analyzed 658 high-risk and medium-risk vulnerabilities affecting Microsoft products and 738 affecting Apple. They measured how many times over the past six years the two vendors were able to have a patch available on the day a vulnerability became publicly known, which they call the 0-day patch rate. What they found: 'Apple was below 20 [unpatched vulnerabilities at disclosure] consistently before 2005,' said Stefan Frei, one of the researchers involved in the study.

The Greatest Threat, and Opportunity for iTunes

http://www.applematters.com

The best way to understand the situation facing iTunes is to look at other business models for distribution that don’t require the ownership of music. Take terrestrial radio, for example. One can live off this as a source of music forever and for free. Because the advertisers pay to have time in between songs to sell you stuff. The radio station uses this money to pay a per song fee to the record label for broadcasting the song.

http://www.news.com

Is Apple rethinking its music strategy?

As part of a deal to offer devices featuring preprogrammed music, Apple would have to agree to share sales revenue from the devices with the labels, says a source close to the deal. Cutting the labels in on iPod or iPhone revenue would mark a sharp turn in Apple's strategy.
