NPD numbers show Apple’s iTunes #1 U.S. music retailer

"Over the past few years, we have watched Apple climb the music sales chart courtesy of the iTunes. Last month we learned that Apple passed Best Buy to become the number two retailer in the the US. Now, Apple has ascended to the top of the charts, surpassing Wal-Mart for the first time ever, according to the NPD MusicWatch Survey," Eric Bangeman reports for Ars Technica.

The best way to understand the situation facing iTunes is to look at other business models for distribution that don’t require the ownership of music. Take terrestrial radio, for example. One can live off this as a source of music forever and for free. Because the advertisers pay to have time in between songs to sell you stuff. The radio station uses this money to pay a per song fee to the record label for broadcasting the song.

Apple could split device sales with music labels

Is Apple rethinking its music strategy?

As part of a deal to offer devices featuring preprogrammed music, Apple would have to agree to share sales revenue from the devices with the labels, says a source close to the deal. Cutting the labels in on iPod or iPhone revenue would mark a sharp turn in Apple's strategy.

Beatles and iTunes At Last?

Ars Technica is reporting that the Beatles and Apple have signed a reported $400 million dollar deal to bring the entire Beatles Catalog to iTunes. From the article: 'As of today there is no time frame as to when the catalog will appear online, but it seems to just be a matter of time. McCartney himself even said in November that the catalog would be making its way onto the the store some time in 2008. While we have heard this sort of thing time and time again, this might just be the real deal. Prepare yourself — Beatlemania is coming to iTunes.'"

Facebook to challenge Apple’s iTunes Store?

Facebook may be getting closer to launching a music service that competes with Apple's iTunes, the Financial Times reported Wednesday," Caroline McCarthy reports for CNET.

"Sources told the publication that Facebook has been approaching major record labels about licensing deals so that it can sell music through its Web site," McCarthy reports.
